CapCut Web is the browser-based version of CapCut, the video editor from ByteDance Pte. Ltd. It runs in Chrome, Edge or another modern browser on your Windows PC, so there is nothing to install for the web version itself: you sign in at capcut.com and start editing. Basic use is free, and if you prefer a program, ByteDance also offers a desktop editor download.
CapCut Web is aimed at people who make short videos for social media and want results quickly: small businesses promoting products, creators posting to TikTok, Instagram or YouTube Shorts, teachers preparing short explainers, and anyone who needs to cut a clip, add captions and music, and export it in the right format. Templates give a head start, automatic captions save typing, and ready-made text styles, transitions and effects cover most needs of a short video. Because it runs in the browser, it works on office PCs where you cannot install software and on lighter laptops, and projects stored in your account can be continued on another device. It is less suited to long, complex projects with many tracks, colour grading or heavy footage, where a desktop editor is faster and more precise. People who care about keeping their media off third-party servers should also consider an offline editor.
For offline work, ByteDance links to the CapCut desktop download. Interface changes are explained on the CapCut help page.
Many tools are free. Some templates, effects and features, as well as extra cloud storage, are part of a paid subscription. Check what is marked as paid before building a project around it, so export does not surprise you.
The CapCut desktop app is in our listings, along with Shotcut and DaVinci Resolve for offline editing. For recording your screen, OBS Studio and Free Cam are options.
